Football Sweeps University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week
Sept. 4 – (ROCHESTER, N.Y.) –
After a decisive 33-10 victory over the University of Rochester, Saturday, September 1, in the opening of the 2007 season, the Carnegie Mellon football team swept the University Athletic Association (UAA) awards for offense, defense and special teams. Senior running back Robert Gimson (Palm Beach Gardens., Fla./The Benjamin School), senior defensive back Jon Scholl (Coraopolis, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) and senior punter Matt Adams (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) were the week one honorees.
Gimson led the potent Tartans running attack as he ran for a career-high 185 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown. Robert headed a backfield that ran for 445 yards. With the 185 yards Gimson moved within 44 yards of sixth place and 92 yards of fifth place on the all-time career rushing list at Carnegie Mellon. He now has 1,821 yards for his career.
Scholl headed a defense that held the Yellowjackets to 44 yards on the ground and 186 yards of total offense. He recorded a career-high 14 tackles including eight solo and 1.5 for a loss. He also forced a fumble in the win.
Adams had four punts that averaged 46.0 yards as he placed two of his punts inside the Yellowjackets 20-yard line. One of his four punts was 61 yards, the second longest of his career.
The Tartans will open their 2007 home schedule Saturday, as the Wolverines of Grove City College travel to Gesling Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
