Football Earns ECAC Bowl Game Bid

Hosts Gettysburg Saturday

Nov. 12 – (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – After finishing the regular season with a 39-21 victory over Washington & Lee Saturday, the Carnegie Mellon University football team was selected to host the 2007 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southwest Bowl Saturday, November 17.  The Tartans will entertain the Bullets of Gettysburg College on the turf of Gesling Stadium for a 12:00 p.m. kick.

Carnegie Mellon finished the regular season with a 6-4 mark following their win Saturday.  In the Tartans victory over Washington & Lee the running back tandem of seniors Travis Sivek (Traverse City, Mich./St. Francis) and Robert Gimson (Palm Beach Gardens., Fla./The Benjamin School) each surpassed the 1,000 yard barrier for the second consecutive season.  They both finished the game over 100 yards, while Gimson led the way with 161 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns and Sivek had 125 yards on 34 carries and one score.  Sivek also reached the 4,000 yard mark for his career now having 4,101 career rushing yards.  The tandem has ranked the Cardinal and Gray nationally ranked, as the Tartans are averaging 283.8 yards per contest from the ground.

This marks the second straight season the Tartans will appear in a postseason contest.  Last year, Carnegie Mellon advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship.  The Tartans opened with a 21-0 triumph over Millsaps College, before dropping a 37-0 second round defeat to eventual semifinalist Wesley College.  This will mark the Tartans second trip to an ECAC Bowl game, as in 1999 the Cardinal and Gray traveled to Frostburg State and came away with a 28-10 victory.

Gettysburg clinched their first winning season since 1995 finishing with a 6-4 record.  The Bullets are making their first postseason appearance since 1985, when the Bullets advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championship.  Senior tailback Tom Sturges leads the Bullets offensive attack with 1,431 yards on the ground and 12 touchdowns.  Gettysburg averages 254.7 yards per game from the ground and allows only 136.8.

When the two teams meet on the gridiron Saturday it will mark the first ever meeting between the two schools.
