Football Sweeps UAA Athlete of the Week

Oct. 23 - (ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – After a decisive 27-0 blanking of the University of Chicago, Saturday, October 21, to move to 2-0 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play and 7-0 overall, the Carnegie Mellon football team swept the UAA awards for offense, defense and special teams. Sophomore quarterback Doug Facemyer (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North), senior defensive back Aaron Lewis (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont) and junior punter Matt Adams (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) were the week eight honorees.

Facemyer finished his first start of 2006 with 149 yards passing and two touchdowns. His 149 yards in the air was a career-high, surpassing the 80 yard total he had in four outings as a rookie. The sophomore left-hander accounted for the Tartans’ first two scores with touchdown passes of two yards and a 41-yard strike. He also completed a two-point conversion later in the game after a Robert Gimson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./The Benjamin School) TD run.

Lewis, who takes the award for the second time this season, totaled nine tackles, an interception and a key pass breakup. His third interception of the year came with the game tied in the first quarter on a third and six play by the Maroons. The Tartans took a 6-0 lead six minutes later. In the fourth quarter, Lewis had a diving pass breakup on second and six with Chicago threatening to score with a little over four minutes to go in the game.

Adams was only called upon twice to punt for the Tartans but did so successfully for an average of 49 yards and a long boot of 55. His 55 yard punt was a season-high and was downed on the three yardline.
