Tartans Finish Third at St. Vincent Invitational

Sept. 22 – (LATROBE, Pa.) – A handful of runners on the Carnegie Mellon men’s cross country team competed at the St. Vincent Invitational on Saturday, September 22. The group finished third in the race with 63 points, while St. Vincent took home the team title collecting 27 in the 118 person race.

Freshman Erik Kallenbach (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) was the top Tartan over the open and repetitive eight kilometer course, finishing sixth overall with a personal record time of 28:04. Junior Raphael Bertrand (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) finished second on the team and ninth overall in 28:21.

Freshman Jono Matusky (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) crossed the finish line next in a personal record 28:37 with senior Jason Jura (Forrest Hill, Md./Dulaney) on his heels (28:41) finishing 11th overall.

Junior Taka Matsuura (Tokyo, Japan/St. Paul's) ran the course in 29:40 (29th) and sophomore Tim Baumgarten (Basking Ridge, N.J.) made his debut, finishing 44th overall in a time of 30:34.

The rest of the men’s cross country team will race on Friday, September 28 at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. The entire team will next race as a whole at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on October 13.
