Sept. 16 - (WAYNESBURG, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon men’s cross country team took home first place honors at the Waynesburg Invitational on Saturday, September 16 among the field of 15 teams. The Tartans won with a total of 40 points, edging out Allegheny College’s 54.
The course, which will be the site of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional on Saturday, November 11, was very open and relatively flat with uneven terrain in some areas. The temperatures stayed in the 60’s throughout the morning with cloudy skies and minimal wind allowing for good running conditions.
With many of the team’s top runners making their season debuts, the team proved that depth would not be an issue this season, with fourteen guys running under 29 minutes for the eight kilometer course. The Tartans were led by sophomore Brian Harvey (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and freshman Dario Donatelli (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic). Harvey placed second overall in the race, with a time of 26:14.71 and Donatelli (26:22.32) finished third.
Sophomore Breck Fresen (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson) placed eighth overall in a time of 26:50.42, with senior Geoff Misek (Goodrich, Mich.) and sophomore Andrew Frederickson (Seymour, Conn./Hopkins) also cracking the top 15. Misek (27:08.80) finished in 13th and Frederickson (27:12.21) was right behind him in 14th.
Rounding out the top seven were sophomore Ryan Anderson (Orchard Park, N.Y.), who came in 16th with a time of 27:17.53 and freshman Sean Hamilton (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy) who came in 25th in 27:35.37.
On Saturday, September 23 the Carnegie Mellon men’s cross country team will split up and send their top dozen or so runners to the Penn State Invitational in Happy Valley and send everyone else to the St. Vincent Invitational. The races are expected to commence sometime late Saturday morning.
