Men’s Cross Country Wins Conference

Oct. 29 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon men’s cross country team rose up to the occasion on Saturday, October 29 to win the UAA Conference Championships on their home eight kilometer course in Schenley Park. The unranked Tartans beat #10 New York University, #19 Washington University, and a strong University of Chicago team to take home the title.

Senior Dana Irrer's (Okemos, Mich.) third place finish, in a season best of 25:24.5, paced the Tartans and fellow senior Nick End (Shorewood, Wis.) came in sixth, with a season best time of 25:37.3. Carnegie Mellon’s third through fifth runners all set personal records en route to their first conference championship in the coach Dario Donatelli era. Junior Mike Bridenbaugh (Defiance, Ohio) finished eighth with a time of 25:45.9, junior Geoff Misek (Goodrich, Mich.) finished thirteenth in 26:03.2 and conference freshman of the year Breck Fresen (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson) was fourteenth, right behind Misek in 26:04.0. Freshmen Brian Harvey (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Bill Lordan (Paoli, Pa./Great Valley) also set personal records of 26:29.0 (24th place) and 26.44.9 (33rd place) to round out Carnegie Mellon’s top seven.

Irrer and End were named UAA All-Conference first team, while Bridenbaugh, Misek, and Fresen were UAA second team All-Conference. The Tartans ended up with a team score of 44 points, edging out Chicago’s 65. New York University’s sophomore Hany Abdallah won the race in a time of 25.17.3 to lead his team to a third place finish of 81 points. Washington University finished fourth right behind NYU with 86 points.

The Tartan runners will be in action again on Saturday, November 12th when they race at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional held at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. The top three men’s and women’s teams from the regional advance to the NCAA Division III National Championships held at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio on Saturday, November 19th.
