Tartans Tabbed Fifth in UAA Preseason Men’s Basketball Poll

Nov. 7 – (ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball team has been picked fifth in the 2007-2008 University Athletic Association (UAA) preseason poll as announced Wednesday, November 7. The voting was conducted among the league’s head coaches.

Washington University in St. Louis will go into the 2007-08 season as the preseason favorite to defend their 2006-07 crown. The Bears claimed seven of eight first place votes to compile 49 points.  

The preseason favorite returns four starters from a team that finished 25-5 overall and 11-3 in UAA play, sharing the Association title with the University of Chicago.  Washington also reached the Division III "Final Four" for the first time in school history, losing to eventual national runner-up Virginia Wesleyan College in the semifinal before defeating the College of Wooster for third-place.

Brandeis University, which picked up the remaining first-place vote, and the University of Rochester were tied for second place with 40 points each, while the University of Chicago tallied 30 points to round out the top four.

The remaining men's rankings are Carnegie Mellon University (25), New York University (18), Case Western Reserve University (14), and Emory University (eight).

Carnegie Mellon will open the 2007-2008 season Friday, November 16, as they travel to Baltimore, Maryland to play in the Blue Jay Classic hosted by Johns Hopkins University.  The Tartans will face the host school in the first round with tip-off slated for 8:00 p.m.
