Tartans Fall at #6 Rochester 64-50

Dec. 1 – (ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball team opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 64-50 loss at the sixth ranked Yellowjackts of the University of Rochester on Saturday, December 1. The Tartans move to 3-2, 0-1, as the Yellowjackets remain undefeated on the season going to 6-0, 1-0.
Carnegie Mellon took a 9-6 lead with 15:07 to play in the first half off of a trey by junior
Ryan Einwag (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin). Einwag’s long ball extended Carnegie Mellon’s streak of consecutive games with a three-pointer to 165 games, but also started a small run for the Tartans giving them a 15-10 lead with 11:53 to play.
Over the next three minutes, the Yellowjackets scored seven unanswered points claiming their first lead of the game 17-15. The two teams played back and forth basketball the rest of the first half. With eight ticks on the clock Rochester’s Dan Milbrand gave the Yellowjackets a 31-29 lead going into the break. Milbrand’s lay-up ended a ten point first half showing shooting 5-of-7 from the field.
Rochester controlled the second half outscoring Carnegie Mellon 23-6 over the first thirteen minutes on their way to a 64-50 victory. The Yellowjackets inside force in the second half played a key, as they dominated the boards giving Rochester many second chance opportunities.
The Yellowjackets hauled in 45 rebounds to the Tartans 27 including a 22-10 advantage in offensive boards. Carnegie Mellon shot 35.3% from the field, as Rochester finished 26-of-62 for 41.9%.
Sophomore
Jack Anderson (Beaver Falls, Pa.) led the Tartans with 14 points, tying a career-high and freshman
Shane Rife (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan) was the only other Tartan in double figures cashing in with a career-best ten. Einwag finished the game with eight points.
Rochester was led by their three big men Uche Ndubizu, Jon Onyiriuka and Dan Milbrand. Ndubizu tallied a double-double with 16 points and 13 boards, as Onyiriuka cashed in with 15 points and Milbrand 12. Onyiriuka and Milbrand ened with nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
The Carnegie Mellon men’s basketball team will next be in action on Saturday, December 8 as they travel to Washington, D.C. to play Catholic University. Tip is slated for 4:00 pm.
