Men’s Basketball Hands City Tech an 89-75 Defeat

Nov. 17 – (BALTIMORE, Md.) – In the consolation game of the 17th Annual Blue Jay Invitational hosted by Johns Hopkins University, Saturday, November 17, the Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball team defeated New York City College of Technology 89-75. The Tartans even their record at 1-1, as City Tech falls to 0-2.
After the first sixteen minutes of back-and-forth basketball, City Tech expanded their 29-28 lead to 38-31 with 2:06 remaining in the half. The Tartans did not go away, as they strung together an 8-3 run to head into the locker room trailing 41-39.
Like Friday night, junior
Ryan Einwag (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) ended the first half as the Tartans leading scorer with 17 points shooting 7-of-12 from the floor. He accounted for four of the Tartans last eight points in the half.
The second half was similar as the first. The two squads stayed even and the Tartans built a 61-56 lead with 10:29 to play off a lay-up by Einwag. City Tech responded quick cutting the Tartans lead to one 63-62 on a fast break bucket by Jamaal Hall at the 7:43 mark. Carnegie Mellon then rattled off 11 straight points increasing their lead to 74-62 and never looked back. During the Tartans run Einwag and senior
Greg Gonzalez (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) tallied seven points including an and-one by Gonzalez.
For the second straight game the Tartans were led by Einwag. The junior cashed in with 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Gonzalez posted his third career double-double with career-highs of 15 points and 13 boards. Senior
Geoff Kozak (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) was the only other Tartan in double figures tallying 11 points and dishing out four assists. Sophomore transfer
Dan Lavallee (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded a career-high nine points including a 3-of-5 performance from behind the arc.
After shooting 35.9% in the first half the Tartans posted a 39.5 mark in the second and still were edged, as City Tech shot 40.0% from the floor to the Tartans 37.8%. Both teams were dead locked on the glass each hauling in 52, but the Tartans committed 15 turnovers to City Tech’s 22.
Hall led City Tech with a game-high 33 points. Ryan Phillip and Omar Mahoney finished with 19 and 12 points apiece in the loss.
The Tartans will be back in action Saturday, November 24 as they host Haverford in the first round of the Radisson / Carnegie Mellon Tournament. The Tartans are scheduled for the 3:00 p.m. tip following the Ohio Northern / Susquehanna game that begins at 1:00 p.m.
