Chicago's Second Half Too Strong for Tartans

Feb. 10 – (CHICAGO, Ill.) – The University of Chicago made eight of their 12 three-pointers in the second half as they slowly pulled away from visiting Carnegie Mellon University 97-78 on Sunday, February 10 in University Athletic Association men's basketball action. The Tartans fall to 13-7 and 3-6 for the year while Chicago moves to 13-7 and 6-3.
The Tartans led by as many as six points in the first half when they went on a 6-0 run to lead 31-25 with 4:35 to go. Junior forward Terrance Bouldin-Johnson (Tukwila, Wash./O'Dea) had a block, rebound and assist on one possession and scored in the post during the swing. The Maroons answered however, with seven straight to regain a one-point lead in the half where there were six ties and nine lead changes.
Chicago's five-point half time lead was their largest of the half as they ended with a 4-for-4 performance from the free throw line in the last 30 seconds to create the 41-36 margin after the Tartans cut the deficit to one on two free throws by junior guard Corey O'Rourke (Merion, Pa./St. Joe Prep ).
The Tartans opened the second half with a trey by junior guard Ryan Einwag (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) but the Maroons rattled off seven straight on their way to a 12-point lead four minutes into the half. A three-pointer by sophomore guard Jack Anderson (Beaver Falls, Pa.) with 11:58 to go brought the Tartans back in the game cutting the deficit to four. However the Maroons responded with an 18-4 run stretching their advantage to 18 and watched it grow to 23 making 10 of their last 14 attempts from the field and making all 10 free throw attempts to finish with the 97-78 victory.
Senior guard Geoff Kozak (Huntingdon, Pa.) finished as the Tartans' high scorer with 15 after a 6-of-8 performance from the field while Anderson and senior center Greg Gonzalez (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) each scored 13.
Chicago was led by Matt Corning's 25 points and Nate Hainge's 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Carnegie Mellon will continue the UAA slate with a road trip to New York University on Friday, February 15. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
