Men’s Basketball Defeats Grove City 70-52

Nov. 18 – (Meadville, Pa.) – After defeating Washington & Jefferson in the first day of the West Penn Classic, the Carnegie Mellon men’s basketball team defeated Grove City College 70-52. In the victory the Tartans had five players in double figures. The Tartans move to 2-0 following the win, as the Wolverines drop to 0-2.

The Wolverines jumped out to an early 9-2 lead with 16:17 to play in the first. The Tartans would counter the Wolverines run with a 15-3 run over the next 4:42 to take a 17-12 lead halfway through the half. Carnegie Mellon would stay in control of the game, as they headed into the locker room with a 32-22 lead.

The second half started the same as the first ended with the Tartans taking control of the game. Grove City would cut the lead to six with 14 minutes to play, but that is as close as they would get.

Leading the way for the Tartans was sophomore Ryan Einwag (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) with 11 points. The Tartans had a tremendous showing from their bench as sophomores Jon Wolleben (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) (11) and Rob Pearson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) (7) along with freshman Jack Anderson (Beaver Falls, Pa.) (10) combined for 28 points with all recording career highs. Pearson continued his career-high evening hauling in 13 rebounds and recording five blocks. Junior Geoff Kozak (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) was the other Tartans in double digits registering ten points.

Carnegie Mellon had the edge on the glass pulling in 43 boards to the Wolverines 25. The Tartan defense held Grove City to 34.0% from the floor, while Carnegie Mellon shot 45.6%.

In the Tartans 77-66 victory over W&J late Friday night, Einwag led the charge with 22 points. Brad Matta (White Oak, Pa./Serra Catholic ) and Kozak each tallied 17, while Matta grabbed seven rebounds.

The Tartans will be back in action Saturday, November 25 as they host Penn State Fayette in the first round of the Radisson / Carnegie Mellon Tournament. The Tartans are scheduled for the 3:00 p.m. tip following the St. Vincent / Point Park game that begins at 1:00 p.m.
