Tartans Fall on Road Versus Emory

Feb. 4 - (ATLANTA, Ga.) – Carnegie Mellon’s struggles continued at Emory University, as the Tartans men’s basketball team fell for the 12th straight time at the Woodruff P.E. Center 94-83 on Sunday. The Tartans are now 12-7 overall and 5-4 in the University Athletic Association, while Emory wins their second league contest and improves to 8-11 and 2-7.
The Tartans struggled to get anything going in the first half, on offense or defense, and found themselves down 53-36 at the break. Emory led by as many as 20 points in the first half making 54.5% of their field goal attempts and using the free throw line to their advantage making 14-of-17. Carnegie Mellon shot 33.3% from the floor and made 12-of-15 from the charity stripe, while holding the rebounding advantage 22-19.
Carnegie Mellon was able to climb back within eight points, but unable to get closer as Emory’s Spiros Ferderigos hit back-to-back three-pointers, the second with five minutes to play, to stymie the Tartans momentum.
Junior guard Geoff Kozak (Huntingdon, Pa.) led four Tartans in double figures with 18 points. Freshman guard Jack Anderson (Beaver Falls, Pa.) followed with 16 points off the bench, while sophomore Corey O’Rourke (Merion, Pa./St. Joe Prep) had 14 points and senior Brad Matta (White Oak, Pa./Serra Catholic) scored 11. Sophomore Ryan Einwag (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the team on the boards with 11 rebounds, as the Tartans had 40 boards to the Eagles 38 for the game.
Ferderigos and Adrian Sosa each scored 22 points, making three treys apiece for the Eagles. Barry Corrado finished with a double-double totaling 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Carnegie Mellon will stay on the road as they travel to Brandeis (Mass.) University, an 81-75 triple overtime winner over the top association team, Washington (Mo.) University, on Friday, February 9.
