Men’s Basketball Wins 96-68 In Season Opener

Nov. 18 - (GROVE CITY, Pa.) - Carnegie Mellon University mens basketball team traveled to Grove City, Pa. to take on Washington & Jefferson College in the first night of the annual West Penn Classic and came away with a 96-68 victory over the Presidents Friday, November 18. The Tartans start the season at 1-0 as the Presidents move to 0-1.

The Tartans broke a 15-15 tie at the 12:57 mark in the first half on a three pointer from senior Nate Maurer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Linsly School) and never trailed the rest of the night. Maurer’s basket started a 12-0 run over the next 4:23 and continued the Tartans run of 31-12 to end the half. Carnegie Mellon went into the locker room with a 46-27 advantage. Maurer hit four threes in the first half and finished 6-9 from behind the arc.

The Tartans had four players in double figures, leading the way was Maurer as he finished with a game-high 27 points. Senior Clayton Barlow-Wilcox (Brookline, Mass.) cashed in with 14 and pulled in 13 boards for the double-double. Junior Greg Gonzalez (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) added a career high 13 points, as senior Marques Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) was the only other Tartan in double figure with a career-high 10 points.

Junior Brandon Studer led W&J with 14 points. Junior Jon Koch finished with 12 points and freshman Josip Luucic-Jozak contributed 10 points.

Carnegie Mellon had the edge on the class 47-30 and dished out 28 assists.

Carnegie Mellon will host the second night of the West Penn Classic, Saturday, November 20 at Skibo Gymnasium. W&J and Allegheny will tip off at 6:00 p.m. followed with Carnegie Mellon hosting Grove City at 8:00 p.m.
