Tartans To Play Division I Princeton During 2005-06 Season
Sept. 26 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Carnegie Mellon University men’s basketball team has announced their 2005-2006 schedule. The schedule is highlighted by 14 University Athletic Association (UAA) contests and 11 non-conference games, including the annual West Penn Classic and the Tartans' home tournament. One of the Tartans' non-conference games will be a trip to Division I, Ivy League powerhouse, Princeton University on December 28th for their first ever meeting to take on the Tigers.
"We are delighted to have the opportunity to compete against one of the most story programs in college basketball," comments Tartans Head Coach Tony Wingen on the Princeton game. "We always look forward to the challenge of playing a Division I basketball team."
Wingen believes that the game will be extra special given the balance of Princeton’s academic excellence and success in basketball.
Coming off the best season in school history after finishing the 2004-05 season with a 19-7 record and 10-4 mark in the UAA, the Tartans look to start where they left off. Carnegie Mellon had never had a winning record in the UAA or finished higher than third place until last season. With a 10-4 mark the Tartans finished in second place and recorded their first ever winning season in the UAA in 18 years. The 19 wins last season set a school record for the most wins in a season in the history of Tartan men’s basketball.
Carnegie will open the season against Washington & Jefferson at Grove City in the first round of the West Penn Classic November 18. The Tartans will try to make it three straight seasons with a winning mark for the first time since the 1976-1979 seasons.
