Tartans Pull Out Double OT Victory at NYU

Jan. 8 - (NEW YORK, N.Y.) - Senior foward Clayton Barlow-Wilcox (Brookline, Mass.) scored his 1,000th career point in the Tartans 89-85 double overtime win at New York University in men's basketball action Sunday, January 8. Senior forward Marques Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) again led #19 Carnegie Mellon in points with 24, as the Tartans stay undefeated in University Athletic Association play, moving to 3-0 and 12-1 overall. NYU loses their first game of the year falling to 11-1 and 1-1.

Senior guard A.J. Straub (St. Marys, Pa./Elk County Catholic) ended a NYU 7-0 run in the first half with a three-pointer, giving the Tartans back the lead at 16-15 with 12 minutes to go. The basket marks the 16th consecutive game Straub has connected from long distance.

Barlow-Wilcox recorded his 1,000th career point with a tip-in at the 4:54 mark of the first half. The basket gave the Tartans a three-point lead they built to five by the break, leading 37-32.

Carnegie Mellon built their lead to 11, 53-42, on two free throws by freshman guard Corey O'Rourke (Merion, Pa./St. Joe Prep). Over the next six-and-a-half minutes, NYU went on an 18-3 run to take a 60-56 lead with 7:30 to play.

NYU held the lead until with 1:26 to play Johnson nailed a three-pointer, giving the Tartans a 71-70 advantage. Two free throws by NYU's Jason Boone, put the Tartans behind 72-71 with a minute to go. Senior forward Nate Maurer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Linsly School) grabbed a defensive rebounded off a missed trey by the Violets and was fouled during the play. Maurer made the second of his free throw attempts to tie the score at 72-72.

A back-and-forth first overtime ended with Maurer missing a shot off the side of the rim at the buzzer, sending the game to the second OT.

In the second OT, senior foward Bary Dunn (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Alderdice) hit a runner in the lane to give the Tartans an 87-85 lead with 37 seconds to go. Junior forward Greg Gonzalez (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) made two backend free throws to help preserve the win.

Following Johnson's 24 points for the Tartans, was Barlow-Wilcox with 17 and Maurer with 16. Barlow-Wilcox recorded his fifth double-double of the year with 10 boards.

NYU's Boone led all scorer's and rebounder's with 26 points and 14 boards. DeCorso also put up 21 points in the double OT defeat.

Carnegie Mellon returns to action on Saturday, January 14 on the road versus Christopher Newport. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
