Maurer Earns UAA and ECAC Recognition
Dec. 6 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Carnegie Mellon University senior forward Nate Maurer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Linsly School) was named University Athletic Association (UAA) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southern Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week for his performance in leading Carnegie Mellon to a 72-71 road win over 12th-ranked University of Rochester in the opening Association game of the season. The Tartan victory snapped the Yellowjackets' 23-game UAA home winning streak and gave the Tartans their first win at Rochester since 1996.
The 6-7 forward averaged 27.5 points and shot 87.5% from behind the arc in leading the Tartans to a 2-0 week to remain unbeaten on the year with a 6-0 mark, the Tartans best start in school history. Maurer followed that by leading Carnegie Mellon to their first win at the University of Rochester since 1996 with a jump shot in the closing seconds to give the Tartans the victory over the Yellowjackets.
In the win Maurer scored a career-high 41 points, two points shy of the Carnegie Mellon single game record set by Bill Soffa during the 1957-58 season. Maurer set a school record with seven three-pointers (7-8), six in the second half and was also 8-9 from the charity stripe for the game. He had 31 of his 41 as the Tartans rallied from a 13-point deficit, where he was 6-7 from behind the arc and 10-15 from the floor in the second half as he scored the Tartans last 16 points of the contest. Maurer opened the week with 14 points in a 95-79 victory over La Roche College.
Carnegie Mellon returns home to face Lycoming College at 8:00 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, December 6 at Skibo Gymnasium before heading on the road for a pair of game this weekend, Friday and Saturday, December 9 and 10 at Skidmore and Union Colleges.
