Men's Basketball Wins Fifth Straight; Best Start In School History

Nov. 29 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - With a 95-79 win Tuesday, November 29 at LaRoche College Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball is off to its best start in school history. The Tartans move to 5-0 with the win, as LaRoche goes to 1-1.

Tartan senior forward Marques Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) broke an 8-8 tie with a lay up at the 13:51 mark in the first half and Carnegie Mellon led the rest of the night. The Tartans would extend their lead to 42-34 at the half.

LaRoche would cut the Tartan lead to four points six minutes into the second half after converting on back-to-back offensive fouls from the Tartans. Carnegie Mellon would regain their composure and build back their lead. The Tartans would lead as many as 17 in the second half to cruse to the victory.

Johnson shot 6-6 from the floor cashing in with a career-high 17 points. Senior Clayton Barlow-Wilcox (Brookline, Mass.) led all scorers with a career-high 30 points shooting 12-15 from the floor. Balow-Wilcox dished out seven assists and grabbed six rebounds. Senior Nate Maurer (Pittsburgh, PA/Linsly School) was the only other Tartan in double figures, as he added 14.

The Tartans shot 62.5% from the floor to the Red Hawks 50.9%. Carnegie Mellon dominated the glass pulling in 38 rebounds as LaRoche had just 20.

Carnegie Mellon will be back in action Saturday, December 3 as they open up University Athletic Association competition. The Tartans will travel to Rochester N.Y. to play the University of Rochester for a 4:00 p.m. tip.
