Men’s Basketball Graduate Goren To Play Professional Hoops Overseas
Aug. 2 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Carnegie Mellon University 2005 men’s basketball graduate Eliot Goren signed this past week with the Manchester Magic of the English Basketball League (EBL) to play professional basketball. Goren becomes the second player to play professional basketball during Carnegie Mellon’s Head Coach Tony Wingen’s coaching career as a Tartan and his third overall.
"This is a dream come true; It is a great feeling," comments Goren. "I always wanted to play professional basketball and now have the chance."
During Goren’s senior season at Carnegie Mellon he led the Tartans with 3.7 assists per game and 46 steals. Goren averaged 9.2 points per game and finished his career with 939 points while playing in all 101 games scheduled. In his last game as a Tartan, Eliot recorded four steals to become Carnegie Mellon’s all-time leader in steals finishing with 179 for his career. He is also third on the all-time list with 322 assists.
"Carnegie Mellon players and coaches helped me get to where I am," said Goren. "I believe this will help the program even more after the best season in school history and will continue growth for Carnegie Mellon basketball."
The Tartans' assistant coach Kevin Byrne was the other Tartan under Wingen to play professional basketball. Byrne, a 1996 graduate of Carnegie Mellon, was a four-year letter winner in basketball. The 6-6 forward went onto lead the EBL in scoring during the 1997 season.
Goren reports September 1st to start a three week practice before the start of a 35 game regular season. Eliot will also be working 20 hours a week at the center in Manchester teaching basketball to young children.
