The Teacher Academy Seeking Resident Teacher

Now Accepting Applications for the 2011 Summer Program

The Teacher Academy Residency and the Practitioner Teacher Program (PTP) are two components of an alternate certification program, committed to helping outstanding professionals and recent college graduates become highly effective teachers in Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS). Professionals from all fields will bring their experience, knowledge, and records of achievement to the classroom to be effective teachers for the students who need them the most. Participants will become part of a powerful network of educational leaders, working with other educators to make systemic improvements in Pittsburgh’s schools, one classroom at a time.

The Teacher Academy is a highly-selective teaching program of Pittsburgh Public Schools, specifically designed for outstanding individuals who do not have a background in education. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree, but do not need to have taken courses in education or have prior teaching experience.

Knowledge and expertise in Math is needed in high-need classrooms throughout Pittsburgh to positively impact student achievement.

Residents of this elite cohort of outstanding new teachers will receive several unique benefits:

  • Attend a pre-service training institute and induction
  • Earn a full-time salary as a Resident Teacher while earning a dual teacher certification in special education and science, math or English.
  • Participate in a year-long teacher residency program working side-by-side with some of Pittsburgh Public School’s master teachers
  • Receive ongoing support and customized professional development
