BIMStorm Washington DC Urban Ecodistrict Competition

The competition runs until the end of January 2011

Onuma, Inc. in conjunction with the buildingSMART alliance and EcoBuild America, invites the world’s most talented and daring designers, planners, artists and students to create a new urban design vision for Washington, DC's Banneker Park area. Your vision can help to create a breathtaking, compelling model for the future of the city's Southwest EcoDistrict. Unleash the power of your imagination to envision a city capable of thriving and setting the example for ecologically sustainable design.

BIMStorm Washington DC Urban EcoDistrict is intended as a place to showcase your capabilities. With the Urban EcoDistrict Competition, we are looking for unique planning and design solutions as well as demonstrations of how collaboration leads to better decisions and solutions.

The National Capital Planning Commission’s Southwest EcoDistrict Task Force is working to transform a precinct south of the National Mall into a series of interconnected and distinguished mixed use destinations that fulfill the future needs of the federal government and the city. In this model EcoDistrict, federal buildings, adjacent spaces, and related infrastructure will function as an environmentally low-impact unit. Banneker Park is 15 acres within the proposed 110 acre Southwest EcoDistrict.

Participants are encouraged to form multidisciplinary teams that leverage the benefit of Building Information Modeling and Integrated Project Delivery processes.

Although based on the actual goals of the National Capital Planning Commission, the competition is independent of official planning and design activities and will not result in any contracts or projects. All prizes are donated by sponsoring businesses and the organizer. All solutions will be posted for public reference on the Internet.

The Urban EcoDistrict Competition will focus on the juncture between the Southwest district of Washington, DC and the Washington Channel. This important site is a focal point at the end of the 10th Street Corridor, linking the Smithsonian Castle with the Potomac River. Competition submissions should include studies to bridge over Interstate 395, linking Banneker Overlook with strong physical and visual connections down to the waterfront. A central concept for Banneker Park includes a site for a national museum or monumental feature that will anchor an extension of the National Mall. Submissions should include a vision and concept for this special aspect of the project.

The Urban EcoDistrict Competition offers participants the opportunity to showcase their talents to create iconic architecture and urban design solutions. Competition entries will be juried by representatives from federal agencies and others.

Prizes with a total value of over $7,500 will be awarded, including the first place winning design award valued at $3000.
