11.11 7:00pm, Baker Hall A51 (Giant Eagle Auditorium) | Design Lectures 2009-10 Presents Christian Schwartz (Design'99) "Type Outside the Bubble" The most important breakthrough in typography in the last 20 years is probably the Font menu, which brought the idea of typographic choice to anyone who has ever sat down in front of a word processor. Never before have so many people been aware of the vast spectrum of typefaces, had a favorite typeface, blogged about type, or been willing to sit through an entire documentary film about a typeface. In spite of this enthusiastic new cult following, type still has a reputation of being design for designers, and design for design’s sake. Type designer Christian Schwartz will discuss a wider view of type and culture at large, and will talk about the cross-pollination between the two.Opportunities
Call for Entries | Modern Painters RE:VISION Design Awards 2010 The first international competition of its kind, the Re:Vision Design Awards challenges emerging designers of all stripes to revisit, rethink and reimagine how we live in our homes. Modern Painters welcomes submissions from across the design spectrum—whether from the field of furniture, lighting, product, interior or environmental design (or some combination of these)—that thoughtfully explore new ways to live, work, play and interact in the domestic environment. Deadline 17 NovemberThe Posner Center Internship Program is searching for applicants! The goal of the program is to provide a practical experience. During the spring 2010 semester, the student will research their own topic, using books and artifacts in the Posner Memorial Collection in preparation for a summer or fall 2010 exhibit at the Posner Center. The exhibit will be promoted by the University Libraries and accessible to all Posner Center visitors, including the University’s Board of Trustees. The application requires that students compose an essay explaining their interest or research question, suggesting possible books to use from the Posner Memorial Collection, and including a brief bio. Deadline November 30, 2009. Please direct questions to the Special Collections Librarian, Mary Kay Johnsen.

Don Carter | The Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) has released its second installment in Heinz Endowments’ funded research on Hazelwood. Remaking Hazelwood, Remaking Pittsburgh: Urban Design Recommendations for Pittsburgh’s Next Big Urban Project is a guiding document whose aim is to promote a comprehensive and sustainable urban design-based approach to the revitalization of Hazelwood through the redevelopment of the 178-acre ALMONO site. The recommendations are the result of a two-year investigation by the RCI into the history, conditions and future of Hazelwood, a once thriving but still promising neighborhood located along the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh’s southeast end. The urban design recommendations incorporate ideas produced by students from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture, particularly those in the fifth-year Urban Laboratory: Community and Urban Design Studio.
