Outstanding Commitment to Students

Nominees for the Andy Award for Outstanding Commitment to Students are dedicated to providing guidance and assistance to students of the university. They surpass the duties of their job description to understand and meet the immediate, as well as underlying, needs of our students. These individuals serve as role models, displaying a positive and professional image at all times.

The following remarks were composed from the nomination letters and statements of support.

camerlango

Renee Camerlengo, Student Affairs
Nominated by: Randy Weinberg

A passionate advocate for our students, Renee is a consistent source of reliable support, providing encouragement, proactive engagement, helpful conversation, responsiveness and sound, objective advice. She takes great care to build meaningful relationships with the students, positioning herself as an ardent supporter of each student achieving his or her best potential here at Carnegie Mellon and beyond. I know it is fair to say that Renee represents all that is special about Carnegie Mellon: a place where you are challenged and supported to be a person of positive impact in whatever endeavor is before you.

hasan

Shams Hasan (CMU'09), Information Technology (Qatar)
Nominated by: Kamal Taynaz

For the past few years, Shams has led an IT-student hiring effort at CMU Qatar. His open-door policy helps them develop professionally, as well as technically. In addition, he was integral in the development of the Student IT Consultant Program, growing the program from 5 to 15 students. He has a tremendous trust in the students' abilities and always brought out the best in them. Shams is a tremendous asset to this organization.

jennifer m

Jennifer M. Lucas, Institute for Software Research
Nominated by: Anthony Tomasic (TPR'09), Eric Nyberg (HS'92), Jeff Eppinger (MCS'82, '88, CS'89) and Lorrie Faith Cranor

Jennifer is the heart and soul of our program. She embodies a spirit of helpfulness and joy, consistently demonstrating her commitment to the academic, interpersonal and professional growth and success of all of the program's students. Her responses are very prompt, her nature is most welcoming and her enthusiasm is contagious. Jennifer has made an outstanding contribution and commitment to CMU and our program, and we enthusiastically nominate her for an Andy Award in recognition of this work.

ripper

Ron Ripper, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering
Nominated by: Jim Garrett (CIT'82, '83, '86)

Ron is one of the people I find most representative of what this award is intended to recognize. He does so many great things for the students because he wants to help them in whatever way he can, not because it is his job. His positive attitude enables him to be very effective in supervising students as they work in the laboratories, and to be someone the students readily approach for help and guidance. Ron provides for our students an excellent model of positive attitude and mature approach needed for professional and personal success.

starek

Renee Starek, Career & Professional Development Center
Nominated by: Karen Stump (MCS'81)

As assistant director of the CPDC, Renee has been instrumental in ensuring outstanding professional outcomes for hundreds of students. Her supportive and personalized approach to mentoring allows her to personally connect with her advisees. Her concern is genuine and sincere, and Renee truly believes that all our students have the power and talent to achieve their goals. She goes above and beyond her job description to ensure that students get all the support they need to flourish both professionally and personally.
