Become a Chapter Volunteer
Getting involved with your local alumni chapter is a great way to reconnect your fellow alumni and with Carnegie Mellon. Whether you have small, large, regular, or periodic amounts of time to give, contact your local chapter or Mara Barker in the Office of Alumni Relations to hear some of the many ways you can get involved.
Volunteer roles vary by chapter and can include opportunities in the following areas:
- Event planning
- Chapter communications
- Young alumni engagement
- Volunteer recruitment
- School & college liaison
Chapter Leadership
In addition to the above program areas, each chapter maintains a few key roles that direct the chapter’s growth and sustainability. These leadership positions include the Chapter President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Past President.
President
- Ensure that chapter adopts and abides by Alumni Association bylaws;
- Call meetings; set agenda; preside over meetings;
- Serve as primary chapter liaison to the Office of Alumni Relations;
- Ensure that all reports are submitted to the Office of Alumni Relations;
- Oversee chapter operations and the various committees;
- Ensure appropriate use of alumni lists and information per the university's privacy policy; and,
- Identify a representative to attend the annual Volunteer Forum.
Vice President
- Assist with management of chapter, especially in absence of the president;
- Serve as event chair if none is appointed;
- Focus attention on volunteer recruitment, retention and succession, or other vital areas; and
- Oftentimes is “president-elect.”
Secretary
- Take minutes/maintain records of chapter meetings; file copy of minutes with the Office of Alumni Relations;
- Keep records of event participants, update alumni contact information, and file reports with the Office of Alumni Relations.
Treasurer
- Coordinate billing/payment information with the Office of Alumni Relations (submit original receipts)
- Collect cash and check payments, then send to the Office of Alumni Relations
- Present financial updates at chapter meetings.
- Serve as chapter liaison to the Office of Alumni Relations regarding financial status of chapter.
Past President
- Stay active with the chapter for at least one (1) year to ensure stability of new leadership;
- Assist and train the president during initial transition.
