The Music Technology Revolution

Presented by Roger Dannenberg, Associate Research Professor, School of Computer
Science & School of Art

Are we in the middle of a musical revolution? It seems hard to disagree, given the
shifts of music distribution from printed sheet music to digital audio downloads and
all of the associated social and artistic changes. Are we at the beginning of the
revolution, or at the end? Dannenberg belives the revolution has just started. While
music representation, storage and reproduction have changed radically, we still treat
music in general as fixed units of information. We are just beginning to be able to

create "music" (whatever that means) that is active, reactive, thinking, plastic, intelligent. Danneberg will illustrate some early examples of interactive music systems and try
to extrapolate a bit to think about what may come next.

Innovative Education: Project LISTEN
Presented by Joseph Valeri, Robotics Institute

Project LISTEN, one of the National Science Foundation's "Nifty Fifty" research projects,
is developing an automated Reading Tutor that helps children learn to read. It uses
speech recognition to listen to them read aloud, and responds with spoken and
graphical feedback. Automated field studies evaluate the efficacy of alternative tutorial
interventions by embedding experiments within the Reading Tutor, which has been
used by hundreds of children at several elementary schools. Visit the Web site for
more information. Project Director, Jack Mostow.
