Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader

What is a SI Leader?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) leaders are undergraduate students who facilitate weekly study and review sessions for selected courses. SI sessions are interactive, collaborative review sessions that combine what-to-learn (content) with how-to-learn (study strategies). SI is open to any student enrolled in a course being supported with SI. Student attendance at sessions is voluntary.

What does an SI Leader do?

  • Attends all lectures, takes notes, and reads course material
  • Conducts two SI sessions per week
  • Plans interactive learning activities that integrate study strategies with course content
  • Prepares handouts with questions/problems to be covered during the SI session
  • Conducts exam review sessions
  • Attends all scheduled meetings with SI Coordinator and SI Supervisor
  • Models outstanding student behavior and successful academic practices
  • Works 10-15 hours per week

Qualifications:

  • Minimum overall QPA of 3.5
  • An "A" in the course you wish to support
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A commitment to helping other students learn
  • Satisfactory completion of SI training course

Training:

Selected applicants participate in a pass/fail training course in an interesting and fun setting. Trainees will receive 4.5 units for satisfactorily completing the nine week training course. The course includes training in: study skills, group work, role playing and facilitating SI sessions. Trainees will conduct mock SI sessions to hone their facilitation skills and will have the opportunity to work with experienced SI Leaders.

Selected applicants will be asked to submit an unofficial transcript and to schedule an interview.
