Carnegie Mellon University is located in the Oakland section of the city on a 90 acre campus adjacent to Schenley Park. The campus adjoins the cultural center of the city and lies about four miles east of the downtown business district. It is within walking distance of the Carnegie Museum, several music auditoriums, and the University of Pittsburgh. Excellent public transportation is available to such downtown attractions as the Heinz Center for the Performing Arts, the Benedum Center, the Pittsburgh Public Theater, PNC Park, Heinz Field, and the Civic Arena.

Approximately two million people live in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The city is composed of many old and interesting ethnic neighborhoods, set among hills and shady, tree-lined streets. It is a city with sidewalks, neighborhood restaurants, bars, and stores, and a strong sense of local community. Public transportation is well developed and easily accessible. Pittsburgh remains one of the most livable cities in America based on its excellent educational, recreational and health facilities, a broad range of cultural amenities (especially in drama and music), and low crime rates and housing costs. The city has successfully undergone a major transformation from heavy industry to a service and high tech economy. Its industrial and social landscapes are rich visual documents. The city is completing its third major physical redevelopment in the past four decades.
