PRESIDENT COHON NAMED TO HOMELAND SECURITY ADVISORY COUNCIL

U.S. President George W. Bush has appointed Carnegie Mellon President Jared Cohon to his 16-member Homeland Security Advisory Council. The purpose of the council is to provide the president with advice on homeland security matters. Council members are drawn from state and local government, the private sector, educational institutions, and public policy and nonprofit organizations.

— Cohon, recently appointed to a second five-year term as president of Carnegie Mellon, is a national authority on environmental and water resource systems analysis, a discipline that combines engineering, economics and applied mathematics. He is chairman of the federal Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board and a member of the executive committee of the Council on Competitiveness, which focuses on U.S. economic competitiveness and leadership. He became president of Carnegie Mellon in 1997.

— "I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as a member of the President's Homeland Security Advisory Council," Cohon said. "I look forward to contributing my experience in environmental engineering and management, as well as helping to represent the tremendous wealth of talent that exists in America's universities."

ROBOTIC SOCCER TEAMS TRAVEL TO JAPAN TO COMPETE IN ROBOCUP 2002

Carnegie Mellon's autonomous robotic soccer teams, CMPack'02 and CMDragons'02, will compete in the Sony Legged and Small-Sized leagues at RoboCup 2002, June 19 - 25 in Fukuoka, Japan. Last year CMPack'01 placed second in the Sony Legged League. The university's robotic soccer teams are led by Associate Computer Science Professor Manuela Veloso and Brett Browning, a postdoctoral fellow in the Robotics Institute. The other team members are James Bruce, Scott Lenser, Michael Bowling, Douglas Vail, Ashley Stroupe, Maayan Roth, Sonia Chernova, Jennifer Lin, Cathy Chang, Dinesh Govindaraju and Larry Xu. EMPLOYEE PICNIC AT KENNYWOOD SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, JULY 13

This year's employee picnic at Kennywood Park, presented by Staff Council, is Saturday, July 13. Pavilions 8 and 9 will be reserved for Carnegie Mellon employees, their families and friends. A prize raffle and children's prize give away will be held at 5 p.m. in Pavilion 8. You must be present and have your Carnegie Mellon ID to claim your prize. Tickets to the park will be sold at the following times and locations:

Additional Ride-All-Day tickets are $16 each. General admission tickets are $5. Tickets must be purchased with cash only.

HUMAN RESOURCES SPONSORS ONLINE SURVEY FOR STAFF

Human Resources is sponsoring a confidential online survey at http://discovery.skillsone.com/welcomecmu.asp to understand how staff members view Carnegie Mellon as a work environment. The survey, provided by Consulting Psychologists Press (CPP), aims to identify workplace strengths and opportunities for improvement. Individual responses will be held by CPP and will remain confidential. Human Resources will provide a summary of results this fall. The survey will be available through June 14. Questions should be directed to the Human Resources Service Center at 8-4747.

SUMMER CAMP INTRODUCES ROBOTICS TO MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

Carnegie Mellon's National Robotics Engineering Consortium (NREC) in the nearby Lawrenceville section of the city is hosting its annual summer camp for middle school students entering grades 6 - 8. The four one-week camps run from July 8 - Aug. 2. Sponsored by the Heinz Endowments, the Grable Foundation and AT&T, the camps offer students the opportunity to learn about robotics, work in teams and build and program their own Lego robots. Teams of camp participants compete in a weekending challenge at the conclusion of the camp. The camp fee is $150 and includes lunch Monday - Thursday. UPDATING YOUR WEB SITE? PLEASE LET US KNOW

Webmasters who have recently made changes, or who are in the process of updating Web sites for their programs, centers, departments, schools and colleges should notify the Advancement Communications Department to ensure that these updates are reflected in the macro-level, or top layer of the Carnegie Mellon Web site. Please notify Bruce Gerson (bg02@andrew) or Kelly Young (ky0i@andrew) of your changes. Webmasters are encouraged to review the university's top layers to ensure their programs are included correctly.

REMEMBER TO NOMINATE DESERVING STAFF FOR ANDY AWARDS

Nominations for this year's Andy Awards are due July 2. The university-wide staff recognition program honors staff for innovation, enthusiasm, citizenship and dedication. Nomination forms and statement of support forms are available on the Web at http://www.cmu.edu/andyawards. Two one-page statements of support must accompany each nomination. Award winners will be announced at a fall ceremony.

— The university community is invited to a celebration honoring Douglas Dunn, dean of the Graduate School of Industrial Administration (GSIA), from 4 - 6 p.m., Friday, June 14 in the Schatz Dining Room, University Center. Dunn is retiring after serving as GSIA dean for the past six years. RSVP to the Special Events Office at 8-5052 or send email to pueschel@andrew.

— Staff Council is conducting its annual elections online at http://www.cmu.edu/staff-council/vote.html. You must use your Andrew ID to login. The voting deadline is June 21. Paper ballots are available by calling 8-5695.

PERSONAL MENTION

— Statistics Professor Larry Wasserman was awarded the 2002 Centre de recherches mathematiques de Montreal - Statistical Society of Canada (CRM-SSC) Prize for his original contributions to statistical theory and his development of Bayesian methodology. This prestigious award is given annually to a Canadian statistician in recognition of outstanding contributions to the discipline in the recipient's first 15 years after earning a doctor's degree. Wasserman, born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, is the fourth recipient of the prize. His contributions to modern statistical theory and his work as a pioneer in Bayesian inference have earned him many distinctions over the past two decades in the United States and Canada.

— Professor Jesse Schell of the Entertainment Technology Center was recently elected to the board of directors of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. The academy is best known for its annual D.I.C.E. (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) Summit, which was established to explore approaches to the creative process and artistic expression applied uniquely to the development of interactive entertainment.

— The Board of Trustees approved the retirement of the following professors at its May 20 meeting: Joseph M. Ballay, emeritus professor of design (effective July 1); Ulrich Flemming, emeritus professor of architecture (effective June 1); Francis C. McMichael, emeritus professor of engineering and public policy and civil and environmental engineering (effective Aug. 8); and Daniel P. Resnick, emeritus professor of history (effective July 1). Resnick will continue as a special assistant to President Jared Cohon.

CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS

Tuesday, June 25: Learning and Development presents "The Medium is the Message: Communicating Salary Increases Effectively." Noon - 1:30 p.m., Connan Room, University Center. Jill Diskin, director of Human Resources Services, will lead an informal discussion group designed to give managers and supervisors an opportunity to discuss techniques for effectively communicating salary increases.
