AGAZINE HONORS COHON, NORDENBERG AS "PITTSBURGHERS OF THE YEAR"

Pittsburgh Magazine's January 2002 cover story proclaims Carnegie Mellon President Jared Cohon and University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Mark Nordenberg "Pittsburghers of the Year."

—The magazine praises Cohon and Nordenberg for forming a "powerful partnership that drives Pittsburgh's future." It cites Cohon and Nordenberg for fostering the creation and development of the Pittsburgh Digital Greenhouse, a consortium of electronic chip designers and manufacturers, including the Sony Corp. and Oki Semiconductor. The greenhouse has created more than 600 new jobs.

—The duo is also lauded for their collaborative efforts with the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, which recently installed the fastest computing system available to U.S. scientists and engineers, and for their recent work to launch the Pittsburgh BioVenture Life Sciences Greenhouse initiative—a plan to stimulate the biotechnology industry in the Pittsburgh region. Cohon and Nordenberg are also credited with helping to convince the Rand Corp. to open a research office in Oakland and for persuading Siemens Westinghouse Power Corp. to build a fuel-cell plant at the Waterfront in Munhall.

—"Together they're... combining the strengths of two great universities in ways that could make Southwestern Pennsylvania an innovator in everything from artificial intelligence to artificial organs," the magazine says. "The Pittsburgh BioVenture/Life Sciences Greenhouse effort" [co-chaired by Cohon and Nordenberg] "is the pair's most ambitious joint effort yet. It aims to create 5,500 new biotech jobs in Southwestern Pennsylvania, to double the number of companies in that sector from 130 to 260, to combat bioterrorism, and ultimately, in the words of UPMC President Jeffrey Romoff, "to mitigate pain, eradicate disease and approach immortality.... Its tools are the computer‹Carnegie Mellon's specialty‹and the scalpel, which is Pitt's forte."

CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN FOR 259-BED RESIDENCE HALL

Ground is expected to be broken this month for Carnegie Mellon's new residence hall for first-year students on Morewood Avenue, between Morewood Gardens and Mudge House. It will be the first new residence hall since West Wing and Resnik House opened in 1990 as part of the East Campus Project.

—The 72,000 square-foot structure has been designed and will be built using "Green Design" principles. It will be an energy- and water-efficient building that conserves materials and resources, minimizes harmful effects to the environment and maximizes living conditions.

—The total cost of the 259-bed facility, scheduled to open in April 2003, is $12.5 million.
