Photo Advisory: Carnegie Mellon Welcomes First-Year Students to Campus on Aug. 20

PITTSBURGH—Carnegie Mellon will welcome 1,449 first-year students to campus on Sunday, Aug. 20 for Orientation 2006. This year's orientation, "Made From the Best Stuff on Earth," will introduce incoming students to Carnegie Mellon, Pittsburgh and each other through a weeklong series of events on and off campus. Some highlights of the week include:

Move-in Day
9 a.m.-2 p.m., Aug. 20, Campus Housing and Oakland Apartments
First-year students will unload their cars and move into their campus housing with the help of families, friends and Carnegie Mellon staff and students. (Margaret Morrison Street and Tech Street will be closed to accommodate students.)

Playfair
8:30-10 p.m., Aug. 21, Gesling Stadium
Billed as "the largest icebreaker ever," Playfair marks the first time the Class of 2010 will assemble as a group. Students and staff will gather on the football field for games, activities and mingling.

Convocation
5:15-6:30 p.m., Aug. 24, Baker Hall Lawn Tent
Faculty, staff and students will gather together to celebrate the arrival of the new class and the importance of the academic journey its about to begin. This special ceremony marks the official start of the Class of 2010's collegiate careers.

The Carnegie Cup
9 p.m., Aug. 25, the Cut
First-year students compete in the annual Carnegie House Games, a series of physical and intellectual challenges. Winners hoist the Carnegie Cup and get bragging rights until graduation.

About the Class of 2010: The 560 women and 889 men in the Class of 2010 represent 31 countries and 44 states (including the District of Columbia), with Mississippi, Montana, Utah, Wyoming and the Dakotas missing from the distribution. More than half (51 percent) of incoming students are from the Middle Atlantic States, while 4 percent come from the Midwest and 4 percent hail from the Southwest. New England, the South and the West each claim 8 percent of the first-year class, and 19 percent of the Class of 2010 calls Pennsylvania home. International students make up nearly 20 percent of the incoming class.
