Contact: U.S. Steel CEO John Surma To Deliver Keynote Address At Tepper School of Business Graduate Diploma Ceremony Tepper Alumna and Co-Founder of World Poker Tour To Speak at Undergraduate Ceremony
PITTSBURGH—John Surma, chairman and chief executive officer of United States Steel Corporation, will deliver the keynote speech at the diploma ceremony for graduate students of the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. The ceremony will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 20 at Soldiers and Sailors Hall in Oakland.
Surma joined U.S. Steel in 2002 as vice chairman and chief financial officer after the company's separation from USX Corporation. He was named president and chief operating officer in 2003, and president and chief executive officer in 2004. He added the title of board chairman in February 2006.
Surma serves on the board of directors of Mellon Financial Corporation and Calgon Carbon Corporation, serves as vice chairman of both the American Iron and Steel Institute and the International Iron and Steel Institute, and is a member of the board of the National Association of Manufacturers. He is involved with civic and educational organizations, serving on the board of directors for the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business Board of Visitors, and the Pennsylvania State University Smeal College of Business Board of Visitors. He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
The undergraduate ceremony at 2 p.m., May 21 — also at Soldiers and Sailors Hall — will feature an address by Audrey Kania, co-founder and recently retired executive vice president of WPT Enterprises Inc. (WPTE), creators of the World Poker Tour, a weekly television series of 17 poker tournaments that appears on the Travel Channel. She graduated from the Tepper School of Business in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in management science and received an MBA from The Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth in 1990. Kania previously served as an executive in New Business Development with the Walt Disney Company.
Founded in 1949, the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon is a pioneer in the field of management science and analytical decision making. The school's notable distinctions include a unique contribution to the intellectual community, including six Nobel laureates and a consistent presence in the top tier of business school rankings.
