General Motors VP Ralph Szygenda to Speak at Carnegie Mellon Master's Diploma Ceremony

PITTSBURGH—Ralph Szygenda, group vice president and chief information officer of General Motors, will address the 2005 graduates of Carnegie Mellon University's Master of Information Systems Management and Master of Science in Information Technology programs, Saturday May 14 at 2 p.m., in the Phillip Chosky Theatre in the Purnell Center for the Arts.

Szygenda, a native of McKeesport, Pa., joined GM in 1996 and was named group vice president and chief information officer in January of 2000. Accountable for the management of all information technology efforts within GM, Szygenda is directly responsible for developing and implementing the company's global digital business strategy.

Before joining GM, Szygenda served as vice president and chief information officer at Bell Atlantic Corporation and as a member of the board of directors of Sodalia Corporation, a joint software business venture of Bell Atlantic and Telecom Italia.

He spent 21 years with Texas Instruments Incorporated, where he served as vice president of information systems and services, chief information officer and vice president and general manager of Texas Instruments Enterprise Systems Business Unit, an external software systems integration business supplying information products and services to the Fortune 500.

Szygenda has been active with various education, business, civic and charitable organizations throughout his career. At present he is a member of the dean's advisory council for Carnegie Mellon's H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management, the Information Management Advisory Council at the University of Texas, Austin, the chairman of the campaign steering committee at Wayne State University and the chairman of the University of Missouri-Rolla School of Management and Information Systems. In addition, he is a member of the The Research Board, InformationWeek magazine's editorial board, and a member of the board of directors of the Handleman Company.

Szygenda earned a bachelor's of science degree in computer science from the University of Missouri-Rolla and a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas. He is also the recipient of an honorary professional degree and honorary doctorate in engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla.
