Carnegie Mellon Student Wins Liberty Mutual Scholarship

PITTSBURGH—Li Ying Lu, a junior business administration major at Carnegie Mellon University, will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship as one of 10 new Liberty Mutual Scholars in a national competition. Liberty Mutual Group is a diversified insurance service organization headquartered in Boston, with more than 900 offices worldwide.

Lu was selected by a panel of experienced college educators from a large pool of nationwide applicants. She has an interest in working in a business environment and was selected based on high academic achievement and potential, leadership and service, and responses to a series of essay questions. In addition to the scholarship, which may be renewed for her senior year, Lu is eligible to be considered for a salaried summer internship with Liberty Mutual.

The scholarships were awarded through a national competition administered by the foundation for Independent Higher Education, located in Washington, D.C., which is the national partner in a network of state and regional associations that develop resources for 651 private colleges and their students. Its partner association in Pennsylvania is the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania, located in Harrisburg, Pa.

Lu is the daughter of Ai Hua Shao and Xun Zheng Lu of Jackson Heights, N.Y., and she is a graduate of Bayard Rustin High School. After graduation she plans to work as an analyst on Wall Street and earn a master's degree in business administration.
