September's Cabaret (Friday, September 27) celebrates the music of Jacques Brel

PITTSBURGH—Carnegie Mellon's School of Drama announces an exciting addition to its already rich 2002-03 production season. The new "Final Fridays: Cabaret at Carnegie Mellon" series will offer a monthly opportunity for campus and at-large audiences to enjoy the unique pre-professional talents of the school's undergraduate Musical Theatre Program.

The first program, scheduled for Sept. 27, 2002, at 11 p.m. in the Wells Video Studio of the Purnell Center for the Arts, celebrates both popular and lesser-known works of Belgium poet-song writer Jacques Brel. Gary Kline, a member of the acting/musical theatre faculty of the school, will serve as musical director.

Elizabeth Bradley, head of the School of Drama, indicates that planning for this performance series is focused on bringing new audiences into the Purnell Center (opened only two years ago) as well as providing affordable access to the exciting work regularly generated by musical theatre students.

On the "final" Friday of each month during the academic year, the School of Drama will transform their Wells Video Studio in the Purnell Center for the Arts into a spare, intimate setting for this late-night, one-hour event. The cabaret performance style puts audience members in close proximity with the performing artists, and Bradley says Carnegie Mellon's series intends to capitalize on that tradition. Programming will change monthly, celebrating both new vocal works as well as favorites from theatrical and other vocal genres.

Curtain time for the monthly series is 11 p.m. A suggested minimum donation for any available cabaret ticket is $5, and tickets will be available, first-come first-served, on the day of performance only. The School of Drama's Box Office opens at noon, Monday through Friday.
