Students from Carnegie Mellon Share Steinway Society Award

PITTSBURGH—The Steinway Society of Western Pennsylvania has announced that two students from Carnegie Mellon's School of Music are the winners of their annual competition.

Kristin Schaffner ('03) and Zachary Burt ('03) will share the $1,000 award for winning the Steinway Society competition. Schaffner, a piano major, is a student of Ralph Zitterbart, Associate Professor of Piano in the School of Music. Burt, a music and mechanical engineering double major, is a student of Irene Schreier Scott, an Artist Lecturer in the School of Music.

"The Steinway Society is one of the pillars of our community's outstanding support for music, so it is especially gratifying that Carnegie Mellon students have earned this great honor," said Alan Fletcher, Head of the School of Music. "This competition is only the public side of the Steinway Society's programs of education and support for music and musicians in Western Pennsylvania. We are very proud to be associated with their work."

Seven students from three universities competed in the event on March 10, 2002. The Steinway Society of Western Pennsylvania is an organization committed to encouraging students and the general public to enjoy and appreciate the music of the piano. The Society follows a tradition, established by the founders of the Steinway & Sons Piano Company, to provide a showcase for pianists and other musicians to meet and perform for the public and for each other.
