Carnegie Mellon Creates New Summer School To Educate Minority Pre-College Scholars

PITTSBURGH-Carnegie Mellon University will graduate its first summer class of minority scholars in a program designed to entice more diversity in the fields of math, science and engineering. The university received more than 1,000 applications for 94 camp spots at the Summer Academy for Minority Scholars in Science and Engineering. The six -week program, started this summer, drew applicants from Maine to Puerto Rico. High school juniors in college-level math, science and engineering courses are scheduled to showcase some of their summer course work at a mini-trade show. Exhibits include handmade robots and specially designed software to help students master the fundamentals of college algebra.
