At this moment, what is personal becomes cultural, in a broader sense of colonization. Therefore, the problem of colonization requires another layer of interactive dialogues, this time between different cultural essences. These essences are primarily concepts and antimonies of time, space, and communication.'

	'The various California styles that blossomed early this century wistfully recognized the tumultuous natural, cultural, and geographic extremes that shaped the American Southwest. The Mission Style fantasized about simple adobe churches, the Pueblo Revival yearned for a structural marriage of Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo forms, the Spanish Colonial commemorated the area's Mediterranean heritage by inventing an architecture "more Spanish than Spain."'

	'The designed environment now includes the whole earth because I take design to mean any modification by humans of the face of the earth. This is a much broader definition of design than is common, but it is an essential one. Designed environments include such human modifications as the planting or clearing of forests, the diversion of rivers and clearing of fields in certain patterns, the placement of roads and dams, of pubs and cities; roadside stands and second hand car lots are as much designed environments as glamorous office blocks and cultural centers; suburbs, nomadic camps or villages, and roadside strips are as much an act of design as architects' or planners' activities of dreaming up ideal cities or creating high-style buildings.'
