Professional & Distance Learning

Continuing the Educational Experience

At Carnegie Mellon, we recognize the importance of lifelong learning. Our Open Learning Initiative offers free online courses and materials to the public. We also offer executive and professional education as well as a range of opportunities for distance learning.

Carnegie Bosch Institute. Offering mid- to senior-level managers the opportunity to hone their skills, The Carnegie Bosch Institute programs include three-day forums, a five-week summer program and other opportunities.

Donald H. Jones Center for Entrepreneurship. The center offers undergraduate, graduate and entrepreneurial education programs as part of the Carnegie Mellon Tepper School of Business. Read about the staff and program.

Heinz School Executive Education. Offering non-degree and graduate options, The Heinz School's Executive Education program offers a number of specially designed executive education programs on campus or offsite. Programs include:

  • CIO Institute. Through enhanced certificate programs, workshops, research and networking events, the Carnegie Mellon Heinz School's Chief Information Officer Institute offers resources to IT leaders.
  • Information Technology Distance Program. Carnegie Mellon Heinz School's Master of Science Information Technology program makes its Information Technology Management track available through distance learning.

School of Computer Science. Offering software engineering courses to executive and distance learners,  Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science programs include certificate and graduate degree options, such as:  

  • Institute for Software Research International Executive and Professional Education. The School of Computer Science's Institute for Software Research International provides executive and distance learning opportunities in a range of subjects, including systems engineering, enterprise architecture and global software engineering.

Software Engineering Institute. With unique courses and training opportunities, The Software Engineering Institute provides opportunities at its Pittsburgh location or at organization, industry and academic sites across the nation.

Tepper School of Business. The Tepper School of Business offers professionals and executives opportunities for continued learning, including customizable options, through their Executive Education program.

Carnegie Mellon’s original campus design is said to have been modeled after a ship by the campus’s initial architect Henry Hornbostel. An actual ship's prow taken from the historic cruiser, the USS Pennsylvania, rests atop Roberts Hall, which overlooks Panther Hollow and the Carnegie Museum complex.
