Reappointment of the Dean of the Mellon College of Science

Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon University Community:

I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. Rebecca Doerge to a second term as the Glen de Vries Dean of the Mellon College of Science (MCS). Since her appointment in 2016, Dean Doerge has provided valuable and effective leadership for MCS to support CMU’s long-term vision of revolutionizing science by combining automation, machine learning and data science with the foundational sciences.

She has innovated and strengthened the college’s Core Education program, which develops well-rounded scientists who are uniquely prepared to enter the workforce or pursue further education. She also spearheaded the creation of a new Data Analytics for Science master’s degree program that launches this fall.

Dean Doerge was instrumental in the conception of the future of science initiative that outlines strategic areas of scientific research and opportunity for MCS as well as the collective CMU community. As part of that investment, CMU will construct a new $210 million science building, supported by a $75 million lead grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation, and open the world’s first academic cloud lab.

Within the college, Dean Doerge established a new administrative structure for the college. This includes the appointment of the college’s first associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion, the first director of graduate programs, the first associate dean for research, and the first associate dean for advancement.

Dean Doerge’s initiatives advance CMU’s commitment to developing interdisciplinary scientific inquiry in fields such as neuroscience, life science, materials science, computational biology, cosmology, mathematics and sustainability. Her innovative approaches to science have already garnered the support of foundations and individual donors, and she will continue to raise additional philanthropic support for endowed professorships, graduate fellowships, undergraduate scholarships and research seed funds.

I look forward to continued collaboration with Dean Doerge during her second term as we prepare our students for the future of science and position Carnegie Mellon as a world leader and change agent for science. Please join me in congratulating Dean Doerge on her reappointment.
