Scott Institute's Electric Vehicle Showcase Draws Enthusiastic Crowd

The Wilton E. Scott Institute for Energy Innovation hosted its second annual Electric Vehicle Show on Monday, April 22nd. The event, held on the campus’ East West Walkway, showcased a range of vehicles from electric cars to cargo bikes, drawing a diverse crowd passionate about sustainable transportation.

The event showcased a total of 12 electric vehicles, comprising 6 cars, 2 golf carts, 1 van, and 1 cargo bike, alongside 4 eBikes. 

The event underscored CMU's ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation in energy solutions, showcasing a vibrant array of electric and hybrid vehicles that are paving the way for a greener future in line with the Scott Institute’s mission of accelerating the transition to a low-carbon energy future. 

Among the notable participants were Costa Samaras, the Director of the Scott Institute for Energy Innovation, who arrived in an all-electric MINI, and Katelyn Haas-Conrad, the Assistant Director for Partnerships at the Scott Institute, showcased a plug-in hybrid Subaru Crosstrek. The Crosstrek's electric motor can drive up to 17 miles on a fully charged battery.

Daniel Tkacik, the Executive Director of the Scott Institute, brought attention to alternative urban mobility with his Urban Arrow Family Cargo Electric Bike, a practical and emissions-free choice for city living. Laura Everhart, Associate Director of Development at the School of Computer Science, turned heads with her Tesla Model Y, a symbol of luxury and sustainability.

CMU Alum Chris Gassman (Tepper, 2012) demonstrated his commitment to sustainability with his Chevy Bolt, while Professor Tagbo Niepa from the Chemical Engineering department showcased the Jeep Grand Cherokee Plug-in Hybrid, emphasizing the integration of EV technology across various vehicle body styles.

The event featured more than personal vehicles; it also showcased campus services EVs, including a Nissan Leaf, electric van, and golf carts from Facilities Management and Campus Services, custodial services, and campus police.

Adding a personal touch, Karen Brooks, known as "Freelance Bike Geek," showcased a few Velotric eBikes -- members of the CMU community can access a special discount for these -- illustrating their versatility and accessibility for commuting and recreation. During the event, a student had the opportunity to test-ride one of the eBikes Karen was showcasing.

On this Earth Day, the event showcased a diverse range of cutting-edge electric and hybrid vehicles, highlighting a collective commitment to sustainable transportation and paving the way for a greener future.
