EPP Students Win Case Competition on Hydrogen

By Kristen Whitlinger

A team of students from Carnegie Mellon University competed and won first place in the United States Association for Energy Economics (USAEE) International Case Competition. The team included Engineering and Public Policy students Max Drickey, Emmy Moore, Joanna Slusarewicz and others.

This year's case question centered around a future hydrogen economy in the United States both in terms of market demand and pricing expectations. Their solution sought to provide a holistic overview not only of the expected growth in industry-led hydrogen demand, but also take into account feasibility measures such as a developing policy landscape and public acceptance. Their solution utilized a mixed-methods approach that included literature reviews, k-means clustering using GIS mapping, and sensitivity analyses on expected pricing.

This provided Laboratory for Energy and Organizations (LEO) students a platform to showcase their knowledge on the topic of hydrogen. Overall, this experience gave the students an opportunity to understand first-hand the expectations and processes utilized when providing analyses and recommendations to clients.
