By Katelyn Haas-Conrad

On February 16, 2022, the Wilton E. Scott Institute for Energy Innovation hosted the U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria along with the Bulgarian Energy Delegation in Carnegie Mellon University’s Scott Hall. The meeting was arranged by the U.S. State Department & Commerce Department.

Following a visit with U.S. DOE Secretary Granholm the day prior, the Bulgarian Delegation heard from CMU leadership who spoke about critical energy and smart city technologies. They learned about the CMU model for fostering transformative innovations that impact economic development and competitiveness. Anna J. Siefken, Scott Institute Executive Director, spoke about the critical energy innovations coming out of Scott Institute faculty research and Jay Whitacre, Scott Institute Director, spoke about the advances in energy storage and batteries happening at Carnegie Mellon.

The visit was organized by CMU’s strong partners in the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service (USFCS) that facilitated the selection of Mill19 for the first ever U.S./European Tech Summit in the fall. This multi-city visit by the delegation from Bulgaria focused on two areas of emerging energy technologies – storage, batteries, grid and nuclear and smart city innovations and strategies.
